Herb Lubalin: Typographer [Unit 25]
Editors: Adrian Shaughnessy & Tony Brook
Consultant Editor: Alexander Tochilovsky
Edition of 2000
“This book, published by the London-based design publisher Unit Editions, focuses solely on [Lubalin’s] style of typography design, which Lubalin described both as “graphic expressionism” and “conceptual typography.” It also features lots of lovely spreads from the radical Ginzburg magazines, all of which have gone down in graphic design history.”

Herb Lubalin claimed not to be a great typographer. ‘In fact,’ he said, ‘I’m terrible, because I don’t follow the rules.’ This new book proves the opposite. On every page it features Lubalin’s typographic genius (logos, layouts, lettering and typefaces), and places him at the forefront of 20th century typographic innovation.
He even had names for what he did: he described it as ‘graphic expressionism’ or ‘conceptual typography’. Using his ability to adapt, merge and create new typographic forms, he was able to enhance and amplify meaning in ways that hadn’t been seen before.
Having published two books celebrating the genius of Herb Lubalin as a graphic designer working in many spheres, this new volume concentrates solely on Lubalin’s typography.
It comes with new texts, new design, new photography, and lots of previously unpublished material – and with a price tag that makes it accessible to a wide audience.

Fascinated by the age of externalization of memory we live in, I inquired about its antagonist: the Art of Memory. Grandmaster Mind is an initiatory journey through mnemonic techniques. From beginner to Grandmaster, the book travels through the re-encoding of mundane datas (lists, numbers…) into memorable visual narratives.
The design is built on the duality between data and its mental projection. The digital aesthetic acts as a personal database of pre-existing memories and knowledge—a key to visualize to-be-remembered informations.

Excedentes (in spanish means surpluses) is a collaborative platform that was born in 2015 with the aim of promoting a sustainable industry by recovering, transforming and giving new use to industrial waste; Extending their useful life and returning them to the market in the form of new products.
The main challenge of this redesign has been generate a more functional and durable image over time, which also promotes the Excedentes platform philosophy: develop a new product from industrial waste.
What is the surplus of the Excedentes Platform? This point was the beging of the graphical analysis of the last identity, coming to the conclusion that the logo was directly related to the first contest: a bag of biodegradable polyethylene. Once the surplus (in this case, graphic surplus) of the last identity was found, it was transformed into a new use. To this end, a series of previously defined parameters were applied on the previous logo based on the winning project of the first contest. An identity based on the philosophy of the Platform: give a new use to surplus materials.

House on Prenzlauer Berg by Loft Kolasinski
Interior design project, design and creation of furniture, terrace on the roof and garden.
The design of a newly built home in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin has used furniture designed and made by Loft Kolasinski: a bed, a chaise longue, a table, a bench and hangers. In addition, the project uses unique furniture, lighting and vintage carpets from the 50s, 60s originating from the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany and Poland, and the unique graphics of the Polish artist Stanisław Dawski dating back to the 1950s and the painting by the Brazilian painter Aecio Sarti. The unique detail of the equipment is made by traditional Polish pottery clay dishes and pots.
